If you like Danny Boyle’s 1996 film Trainspotting based on the Irvine Welsh book by the same name then you’re heading down the right road. These two books were my introduction to drug culture. We would trade Irvine Welsh books at the back of the bus like it was a book club, and they were mostly “banned” material around my family. Still, they fed my curiosity for what seemed like an intoxicating alternative universe. Once you get the hang of reading Scottish dialects from the mouths of Gen-X ravers, you can better understand the depravity. —Alana A
